Hotmail is one of the second largest free email providers on the internet after Gmail. It can be used by anyone in the world to send and receive email via a web browser. The service was founded in 1995 by Jack Smith and Indian entrepreneur Sabeer Bhatia and started service in 1996. It grew very quickly, and at the end of 1997, it was acquired by Microsoft for a whopping $400M and migrated entirely from the Linux platform to the Windows platform.

It later merged with Microsoft’s other services to become an integral part of MSN and Windows Live. From July 31, 2012, Microsoft Outlook would phase out Hotmail services, emphasizing its cloud computing strategy. On May 2, 2013, Microsoft announced that the upgrade of Hotmail to Outlook mailbox was complete. Users entering Hotmail.com have started to be redirected to their Outlook mailbox and Hotmail.com has officially ended.

Outlook.com

On Tuesday, July 31, 2012, Microsoft launched Outlook.com, a free web-based email service portal that will replace www.hotmail.com.

Microsoft has added many innovations and high storage capacity to its new web-based Outlook client software to attract users from rival companies such as Gmail and Yahoo mail.
In addition to the convenient new Metro interface, Outlook.com has integrated social networking functions into the portal. Users would be able to see status updates and content more clearly from websites like Facebook, Google, Twitter, and LinkedIn instead of a standard email inbox. Microsoft also added the live chat application Skype on Outlook.live.com, rivaling Google Talk.

To clear up the confusion and grow, even more, Microsoft combined the Outlook application in its office suite with the www.outlook.com web service under one name. In the new version of the Hotmail service, users can easily access Microsoft’s various products such as OneDrive, Office 365, SkyDrive, Office Web Applications to store files under a single account.
